What Does Workers’ Compensation Insurance Cover?
Workers’ compensation insurance, or workers’ comp insurance, may provide benefits to your employees after work-related injury or illness, including the following:
- Wage-loss benefits—These can help replace lost income.
- Medical benefits—These can help cover medical expenses.
- Disability benefits—These can provide financial assistance for an employee who develops a permanent disability following a work-related accident or illness.
- Vocational rehabilitation benefits—These can provide training or other services if an employee cannot return to the work they were performing before the job-related accident or illness.
- Death/dependent benefits—These can be available to an employee’s spouse or dependents if an employee passes away due to a work-related injury or illness.
After a workers’ comp claim, employees may be eligible for other workers’ compensation benefits. Additionally, workers’ compensation can provide policyholders with liability insurance that may cover legal costs if a lawsuit related to the injury or illness is filed. Contact our agents for additional information on terms, limits and exclusions.
Does Florida Require Workers’ Compensation Insurance?
In general, Florida law requires most businesses with four or more employees to carry workers’ compensation insurance. Construction companies with at least one employee generally need coverage and agricultural companies with at least six employees or 12 temporary employees who work more than 30 days in a season but not more than 45 days in a calendar year also typically need workers’ comp.
Even if it is not required, carrying workers’ compensation insurance may benefit your business and your employees. Reach out to our agents to discuss specific rules, requirements and exemptions.

Each state has different laws governing the amount and duration of lost income benefits, the provision of medical and rehabilitation services and how the system is administered. For example, in most states there are regulations that cover whether the worker or employer can choose the doctor who treats the injuries and how disputes about benefits are resolved.
Workers compensation insurance must be bought as a separate policy. Although in-home business and business owners policies (BOPs) are sold as package policies, they don't include coverage for workers' injuries.
